Observe the child in interaction with the adult within daily routines.
No elicitation needed.
The child gives the adult unsolicited hugs and kisses or brings objects to the adult as a “gift.”
With busy lives, it is often difficult to respond to each overture of the child, but help parents understand the baby’s approach can be dealt with quickly with a smile, a hug and a redirection to an interesting activity. Adults need to model caring nurturing behaviors and reinforce them in the child.
