Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the infant during daily routines.

Behavior Observed

The infant pulls to stand or moves into stand from a squat. Often the child appears unaware that she is standing without support.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Infants often drop to the floor when adults hold their hands in standing and then release their support. Infants gain confidence when they choose to stand on their own, without thinking about it. This often happens when they have support, such as a low table, where they play with objects. Because most objects need two hands to manipulate and operate, the child ends up standing unsupported.
