Makes rocking boat “go”

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child with a rocking toy that she can sit in or on stably, such as a rocking boat.

Elicitation Strategy

No elicitation is needed if the equipment is the right size for the child. If needed, the adult can encourage exploration of the slide, rocker, etc.

Behavior Observed

The child shifts her body weight back-and-forth to make a rocker move.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Children at this level like to climb and explore. They love movement, including swinging, sliding, rocking, and spinning. Encourage parents to take the child to the park if they do not have toddler playground equipment at home. Explain the importance of the different types of sensory stimulation the child gets from movement up, down, around, and back-and-forth.
