Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child during self-care routines in the bathroom.

Elicitation Strategy

The adult helps the child get the toothbrush ready and encourages him to brush “all by yourself.”

Behavior Observed

Child wants to do things by himself. The child understands that the toothbrush goes on the teeth, but has trouble orienting it horizontally.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Encourage parents to involve children in washing and drying tasks throughout the day. Wash hands after eating or playing outside. In addition, children can help wash and dry plastic dishes. Brush teeth after meals to give children practice and build the routine. Include washcloths, toothbrushes, combs and brushes in dramatic play.
