Demonstrates recognition of names of objects by looking at them when named

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the adult talking to the child about familiar nearby objects.

Elicitation Strategy

Remind the adult not to point at the object named. The infant is to look at the object rather than the adult’s finger.

Behavior Observed

The infant looks at objects that are nearby and commonly named (e.g., bottle, blanket, sister or brother).

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

The child learns the names of people and labels for objects first. Tell early childhood educators and parents to watch the child’s visual search and eye gaze as they mention specific items. This will show them what the child understands.
