Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the infant when near a bookshelf or materials with print and pictures (catalogs, ads, etc.)

Elicitation Strategy

No elicitation needed if print and picture materials are within reach.

Behavior Observed

The infant is drawn to images and print. He pulls them off shelves, the coffee table, out of baskets, or wherever they are found. He loves turning pages (in groups) just for the action alone, but also likes exploring the pictures.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Help early childhood educators and parents understand the importance of literacy materials for children. Even catalogs and ads that come in the mail provide an opportunity to explore print and pictures. Learning to turn pages also helps develop fine motor skills, as infants need to isolate fingers and move the page from one side of the book to another.
