Stares at black and white patterns

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child looking at two different pattern options.

Elicitation Strategy

Provide simple patterns with black and white or sharply contrasting patterns.

Behavior Observed

The infant stares at the simple black and white patterns for several seconds.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Explain that infants do not have perfect vision at birth. For the first few months, as their vision is developing, they see stark contrasts, such as black and white most clearly. They also see things within a close range of 8-12 inches. Parents can purchase or make black and white patterns for the child to see when lying in the crib or on a mat on the floor to give him something to look at.
