Tells a suitable ending to a simple story

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child with an adult or other children making up stories.

Elicitation Strategy

Start a story with a setting and characters and a few events. Ask the child to continue the story until the end.

Behavior Observed

The child can imagine events and possible consequences. She can invent simple stories and sequences.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

The child can now conceive of multiple options for a story ending. When reading or making up a story, the adult can ask the child, “What are the different ways this story could end?” “What else?” Encourage the child to think “out of the box.” She can make up her own fantasies and act them out.
