Listen as the child describes how to read.
Ask the child what part of the page tells you what to read.
The child points to the print when asked to show where the words are that tell the story.
Encourage early childhood educators and parents to point out the text and tell the child, “These marks are print. It tells me what the book says.” Point out specific words of interest to the child.
