Recites familiar phrases of songs, books and rhymes

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the adult and child singing familiar songs or reading a favorite rhyming book.

Elicitation Strategy

The adult starts singing one of the child’s favorite songs, then lets the child sing some parts alone. Alternatively, the adult can read a familiar rhyming book and let the child fill in words and lines.

Behavior Observed

The child remembers rhyming words from familiar books and songs, finger plays, or television shows.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

The child at this level loves to sing songs and recite rhymes. Parents can support this type of activity by joining the child in singing and dramatic play or by playing music to sing to in the car. The local library will also have songbooks and CDs that can expand the child’s and adult’s repertoire. Encourage parents to share their own favorite songs from childhood, as well as find new ones for both of them to learn together.
