Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the adult reading several different types of books to the child: a simple storybook, a picture book, and an alliterative book.

Elicitation Strategy

Read the books with expression and allow the child to participate, imitating words, filling in familiar words when she can, and talking about the pictures.

Behavior Observed

The child imitates and remembers the alliterative and rhyming words more frequently than other words.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

There are many alliterative and rhyming books available for toddlers. Encourage parents to take advantage of the local library to access a variety of these books. They then can purchase the favorites, if desired. Children love to have their favorite books reread many times. This allows them to learn the words, rhymes, and patterns in the book.
