Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child in dramatic play with household objects or familiar story characters.

Elicitation Strategy

Observe the child in dramatic play with familiar real or plastic objects from daily routines. A doll may also prompt the child to act out sequences on the “baby.”

Behavior Observed

In dramatic play the child will re-create simple sequences, such as feeding the baby and putting it to bed.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Encourage parents to talk to their child about what they just did, even if it is just remembering what they bought at the store or what they ate at a restaurant. Providing dramatic play opportunities after an event also encourages the child to reenact these events, thus reinforcing his memory. Remind parents that play is learning and dramatic play encourages building on the child’s experiences.
