Repeats pleasurable self-directed actions

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the infant when awake and lying on her back.

Elicitation Strategy

No elicitation needed.

Behavior Observed

The child will move hands and/or feet, then repeat the action. This is especially true if the child’s fist finds her mouth.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Parents need to understand the importance of giving the infant freedom to move for part of the day. Swaddling or being strapped into a seat will restrict movement. Accidental movements allow the child to discover how body parts can be moved intentionally.
