Watches adults and anticipates their actions

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child and adult playing chase or observe the child and adult during daily routines.

Elicitation Strategy

Ask the adult to start to “get” the child. After one turn, have the parent stop and watch the child. No elicitation of routines needed.

Behavior Observed

The child will start to crawl or run from the adult. After the child is caught, the child will take off again, looking back at the adult to see if they are chasing them again. During daily routines the child observes what the adult does and moves to do the next action, anticipating what comes next.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Explain to parents how children read their verbal and non-verbal cues. They also remember sequences from past experiences. Thus they anticipate what is wanted based on both physical cues and words. They also know that when a parent demonstrates something, the parent wants them to imitate their behaviors.
