Attends to contours and contrasts

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child’s attention to mobiles, people, and toys.

Elicitation Strategy

The adult can position her face close to the child. Observe where the infant’s eye gaze goes. Also hold different colored objects above the child.

Behavior Observed

The child looks at the contours of the face and the eyes. She stares longer at objects with sharp contrasts, like black and white.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Children’s vision is still developing, so they look at the aspects of the environment that stand out most clearly. At this age toys and materials with clear contrasts are best for encouraging the child to visually explore the environment.
