Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child’s gaze at different types of materials and toys.

Elicitation Strategy

Hold up objects of different colors.

Behavior Observed

Although black and white and high contrast color combinations are still a focus of attention, the infant starts to stare longer at brightly colored objects.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

The primary colors of many baby toys become more interesting at this age. If early childhood educators and parents have used black and white stimuli for mobiles or other visual stimuli, encourage changing these occasionally to encourage the infant to begin to differentiate colors.
