Watches others draw

Situations for Observation of Skill

Give the adult a piece of paper and a crayon or marker.

Elicitation Strategy

Ask the adult to draw anything on the paper (e.g., shapes, a design, a picture) while the infant watches. Observe the infant’s eye gaze.

Behavior Observed

The infant looks back-and-forth from the adult’s face to his hands. The infant watches and then may reach for the marker to try this interesting action and effect for himself.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Encourage parents to let their infants watch them write grocery lists, notes, etc. Explain how watching others create pictures, designs, and writing will motivate the infant to want to explore markers, colors, and, later, writing.
