Looks at pictures for up to 1 minute

Situations for Observation of Skill

Have board books with single pictures on each page (e.g., a picture of an infant in a hat).

Elicitation Strategy

Present the book to the infant and observe the child’s exploration of the pages.

Behavior Observed

The infant looks at pages individually and may point out something to the adult or vocalize about a picture.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Books are a very important means of introducing representation of the world to the infant. Encourage parents to share books with their infant and label and talk about the aspects of different items on the page. Recognizing familiar objects and people in pictures is a prerequisite for children wanting to create their own images.
