Provide a variety of art materials, including paper, crayons, glue, macaroni or cereal shapes, pipe cleaners, stickers, puff balls, etc.

Demonstrate how paper can be folded and torn. Twist and bend the pipe cleaners, and show the child how glue is used to combine objects. Then let the child explore independently.

The child experiments with a variety of ways of using the materials.

Parents may not think about art activities for children of this age, and they often fear the messes children may make. Encourage them to set up an easily cleanable area (e.g., newspapers or plastic table cloth) and provide simple, safe materials. Tell them to save free stickers they get in the mail, old greeting cards, bows, and so on. Have an art box for children to keep their art materials.
