Examines non-realistic art and envisions what it could represent

Situations for Observation of Skill

Provide opportunities in the classroom to look at art of different artists such as Picasso or Miro to see what they think is being represented.

Elicitation Strategy

Give children time to look at some of the art books or pictures. With a small group of children talk about the pictures and ask, “What do you think this picture illustrates?”

Behavior Observed

Children identify what they think a piece of art represents. They point out features that are similar to, or remind them of, people, places, or things.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Early childhood educators and parents can provide opportunities for children to experience different types and forms of art. Books, visits to museums, and art in the environment should be shared and discussed with children.
