Calmed more easily by familiar adult

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the infant during daily routines when he is not being held. Observe the child when he becomes fussy.

Elicitation Strategy

Have an unfamiliar adult pick up the child to calm him. Then hand the child to the familiar adult.

Behavior Observed

The infant may not stop fussing with the stranger (may even cry harder), but calms quickly with the familiar adult.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Explain that calming with the familiar adult demonstrates the child’s growing trust and expectation that the adult will meet their needs.
