May show distress when strangers are near

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the infant’s reaction to the approach of a stranger.

Elicitation Strategy

Have a stranger approach the infant and talk to her.

Behavior Observed

The infant will stare at the stranger, turn away, and/or cry.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Encourage early childhood educators and parents to continue to talk to the person in a comfortable way. The infant will react to the adult’s response to the stranger. If the adult is comfortable, the infant will calm and begin to examine the stranger without distress.
