Time: Shows awareness of consistent daily routines

Situations for Observation of Skill

Discuss with the parent activities the child might do to indicate awareness of time for daily routines.

Elicitation Strategy

Ask the parent if the child knows when it is close to mealtime or naptime. What does the child do to indicate this? How does the child indicate she knows it is time for bed?

Behavior Observed

The parent will give examples of what the child does to indicate time awareness. For example, the child cries or crawls to the parent at mealtime. Perhaps the child seeks out her blanket or snuggly at bedtime?

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Parents may not be aware that their child is learning concepts of time during daily routines. Remind them of the importance of consistency. Children learn the sequence of daily activities through consistent repetition. Knowing what comes next also provides them with a sense of security.
