Observe the infant during daily routines.
Introduce some toys and materials that are novel to the infant in order to observe exploration.
To determine an object’s size an infant will place both hands around it. To determine characteristics, she use her fingers and mouth to taste it.
Touch is an important sense for infants for learning. Some infants may have preferences for certain types of textures (e.g., soft versus hard). Early childhood educators and parents can encourage exploration of a variety of materials by playing with the child. Explore textures in nature in particular, including sand, water, grass, leaves, etc.
