Recognizes sounds of parents’ voices

Situations for Observation of Skill

Also observe the child when the parent and another adult are communicating out of the baby’s line of sight.

Elicitation Strategy

In addition, observe the infant’s gaze when the parent is talking but the baby cannot see her.

Behavior Observed

When the infant hears the parent’s voice her gaze will turn in that direction rather than toward the visitor. Although interested in the other voice, gaze seeks the parent longer.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Help parents understand that one of the things the child is learning is pattern recognition. There is a different pattern to each face and each voice. One way the child comes to differentiate people is through recognition of these patterns.
