Situations for Observation of Skill

Ask the parent to keep some of the child’s clean laundry in a separate basket for this activity. While they are pulling out the separate pieces the child can talk about the clothing and where they go on his body.

Elicitation Strategy

Model for the parent how to involve the child in laundry day and teach math at the same time! Ask the child to find all of a specific article of clothing, such as socks or shirts. When the child finds an object of clothing ask the child where on his body the item goes. “Show me where you wear that.” If the child puts together a shirt and pants, Say, “Yes, those go together. Can you find another shirt like that one?”

Behavior Observed

The child will find clothing pieces that are alike and put them together.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Encourage parents to involve children in the daily chores. Young children love to help and they practice matching and classifying skills while doing it. Parents can be encouraged to do matching and classifying at the grocery store too, pointing out things that are the same color or shape and so on.
