Read a book about the seasons and nature and use this to talk about what the child sees in the outdoors, what he wears in the summer, winter, etc.

Match pictures to similar objects, find things in the display that are the same color as those in the book, etc.

The child can identify the similar objects in pictures and nature.

Parents can do this at home with books that may have items found in their home. Play I Spy with the book. “I spy something in this room that is the same color as this red in the picture.” Or point to something on the page and say, “I spy one of these in this room.” Make it a turn-taking game, so the child can say things you should find. Make sure that parents understand the reason for doing this type of activity is to build the foundations for literacy. Pictures represent something real and later words will represent the same thing.
