Observe the infant during daily routines.
Listen to vocalizations.
The infant cries and vocalizes, but without intent to communicate.
Explain to parents that infants begin to understand that sounds communicate meaning when adults respond to the sounds as if the infant communicates something specific. For example, when the infant cries and the parent responds by feeding the infant, the infant learns that the sounds they make have a result.
