Observe the infant on the parent’s lap in a face-to-face position. Observe the child in interaction with both an adult and a toy held over her head.
Ask the parent to talk to the infant (within 8 to 10 inches) and observe the child’s reaction. Ask the parent to hold a toy or other object over the infant (within 8 to 10 inches) and observe the child’s response.
The infant stares for a longer time period to the adult than the object.
Encourage parents to spend time talking, singing, and playing with their child. Opportunities to interact with people other than the parents are recommended. The infant will learn to differentiate the look, sound and feel of the parent.
