Goal: Children speak audibly and express thoughts, and feelings, and ideas clearly.

Age: 24-27 Months

Produces two-and three- word phrases; makes simple statements (e.g., “More juice.” “Me do”) and asks questions about objects, people or events (“What that?”)

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child during play and daily routines.

Behavior Observed

The child communicates mostly with multi-word phrases, statements or questions.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Early childhood educators and parents can comment and ask simple questions to encourage short conversations about a topic. Reading books using dialogic strategies (i.e., joint ‘reading’ with comments and questions about the pictures and story) is helpful for learning to talk about a topic.
