Notices and talks about differences in people’s size, eye color, skin color, hair, etc.

Situations for Observation of Skill

Read a children’s book with the child about people from different countries. Discuss the characteristics of the children in the book.

Elicitation Strategy

Ask the child about the people in the book. How are they like him? How are they different?

Behavior Observed

The child notices differences and discuss them. He may ask questions about the differences as well.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Early childhood educators and parents should be encouraged to expose children to books about different people and cultures. Children of this age may have limited exposure to diversity, so introduction to diversity through books may help them understand the differences they encounter later.
