Situations for Observation of Skill

Read a book together about something that is familiar, but not present at the time (e.g., a trip to the park, the zoo, etc.).

Elicitation Strategy

Comment on, ask questions about, and discuss the various aspects of things in the book.

Behavior Observed

The child converses about a topic that is familiar to him, even if it is in the past.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Having two-way conversations builds narrative skills. Encourage parents to talk about previous activities, such as going to the store, visiting a grandparent, going to a party, and so on. Ask about what happened, how she felt, what she liked, disliked, etc.
