Observe the child with paper and pencil or marker.

Suggest that the child make a greeting card for someone in the family. Fold the paper so it opens like a card. If needed show the child how a card has a picture and writing.

The child will draw a picture and then attempt to write on the card on the inside. She is experimenting with writing lines and loops in different ways. Lines go in different directions.

Early childhood educators and parents can point out the different purposes for writing and give children their own paper when making grocery lists, writing on cards, etc. Children will refine their grasp if they use thin, rather than thick, pencils, markers, and crayons. Encourage adults to do art projects with glue sticks, stickers, and pictures. Children may also like coloring in coloring books or on placemats at restaurants.
