Chooses playmates of the same race if they are present

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child in play areas with children from different cultures and races.

Elicitation Strategy

No elicitation needed.

Behavior Observed

The child chooses children of the same race, even if he does not know any of the children present. He chooses someone who is similar to himself.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Explain that because children notice differences, they often choose children who look like them in size, age, gender, and race. Early childhood educators and parents can help children understand similarities by being a play partner and engaging children who are different in some way to play. The child will soon overcome the visual differences and find the similarities.
