Goal: Children speak audibly and express thoughts, and feelings, and ideas clearly.

Skill Progression: Articulation/ sound production

Age: 33-36 Months

Produces some consonant clusters (e.g., st, sp, bl, fr, sw, etc.)

Situations for Observation of Skill

Read a book together that involves using multisyllabic words and rhymes, such as a Dr. Seuss book.

Elicitation Strategy

Observe whether other children understand the child. Discuss the story, the pictures and the rhymes in the book. See if the child can create a word to rhyme with a word in the book.

Behavior Observed

The child is easy to understand even though some mispronunciations are made.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Encourage parents to read a variety of books, including rhyming books and books with longer words in them. After reading the book several times, the child can “read” it to the adult with some assistance. A librarian can help parents find books that have the sounds the child has difficulty mastering. Books enable the child to practice in a nonthreatening way.
