Observe the child putting on shirts or pants with snaps or Velcro when dressing.
No elicitation needed.
Snaps frequently are not found on shirts, but may be on jeans or pants. Velcro may also be used as a closure on pants. Children use skills to either open or close two sides of a garment.
Early childhood educators and parents can give children practice with different types of fasteners during everyday activities. For example, children can help with zip-lock plastic bags, potato chip bag clips, foil and plastic wrap, twist ties on wrappers, etc. All use different movements helpful for dressing.
