Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the child dressing or interview the adult.

Elicitation Strategy

Provide dress up clothing in the dramatic play area. Ask the adult which dressing tasks the child can do independently.

Behavior Observed

The child dresses himself with little assistance except for small buttons.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Early childhood educators and parents can involve children in activities that require using fine motor skills that develop precise manipulation, ability to push and pull, rotate, and orient. Involve children pulling off and placing stickers, tearing paper, manipulating small objects in one hand, sewing with large needles, etc. All of these build eye-hand coordination, gradation of movement, and orientation skills.
