Observe the child during daily routines and play interactions or read the child a storybook.
The adult reads a storybook with the child. Prompt discussion by saying, “Tell me all the things happening on this page.” Ask what questions the child has about a story or character.
The child uses a variety of prepositions, pronouns, and questions that require compound sentences, prepositional phrases, infinitives and clauses.
Early childhood educators and parents can encourage use of more complex sentence structures by modeling their use, providing prompts (e.g., The cat climbed up the tree and…” or “Tell me what you want to do and where you want to do it.”)
