Read a book about children from different parts of the world.
Discuss how children eat, dress, live, and behave differently depending on where they live, their culture, or religion. Talk about the child’s own life in comparison to those in the book.
Children describe their own practices and maybe those of someone they know from another culture or country. They have more questions than information at this level.
Introduction to other cultures is a critical part of learning about the bigger world and diversity. Early childhood educators should make this an ongoing discussion and integrate diversity into the curriculum all year. Also help parents understand the importance of exposing children to other cultures through books, friends, culture fairs, exhibits, and so on.
