Discriminates sounds and voices

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the infant’s reaction to sounds and different voices.

Elicitation Strategy

Have an unfamiliar adult and a familiar adult talk to the infant when she is lying in the crib or on the floor, but cannot see the speaker.

Behavior Observed

The infant moves arms and legs in excitement and may smile when she hears the adult’s voice.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Infants recognize their parents’ voices and know that the voices of others are not their parents’. They also know that other environmental sounds are not those of people. Show parents the child’s response to their voice to demonstrate this special recognition.
