Watches own fingers

Situations for Observation of Skill

Watch while the infant is lying on her back or in the adult’s arms.

Elicitation Strategy

When the adult is holding the infant, the baby’s arms are brought closer to the front of the body, making it easier to see the hands.

Behavior Observed

The infant stares at hands and moves fingers as she watches.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Use a washable colored marker or other non-toxic color on the infant’s first finger. This will attract the child’s attention and encourage the child to move this finger.
