Stares intently at pictures

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the infant looking at large photographs or pictures of clearly demarcated objects in books.

Elicitation Strategy

The adult holds the picture in front of the infant and talks about the picture.

Behavior Observed

The infant stares at the picture and then reaches toward and possibly touches it.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Many parents think an infant is too young for books, but this is not true. Books with patterns, pictures of babies or large bright objects, or textures will draw her attention. Help parents understand that interest in books can be nurtured early in infancy.
