Observe the infant during daily routines.
No elicitation needed.
The baby will wave arms and legs and may smile when the adult bends over him. The baby may also wave arms and legs when he is laid down and the diaper is removed, when the adult comes to take the infant from the crib, and when a bottle or breast is introduced for feeding.
Help early childhood educators and parents read these bodily movements as communication. This is the baby saying, “I know what’s coming and I like it.” Encourage early childhood educators and parents to talk to the baby about what is happening to introduce conversation and vocabulary.
