Observe the child looking at stationary and moving objects.
Present both situations to the child. Hold up a non-moving toy and a toy that has action.
The child will show more animation and stare longer at the moving object.
Explain to parents that even at this early age, children are formulating categories of understanding. They can tell the difference between moving and nonmoving objects. This reinforces the importance of parents exposing infants to a variety of types of stimulation as they learn about their world.
