Observe the infant during face-to-face interaction with an adult and during daily routines.
After engaging the child in vocal play, the adult stops interacting or does something nearby.
The child demonstrates emotions through facial expression and vocalizations.
Encourage early childhood educators and parents to pay attention to the intonation and pitch of the child’s vocalizations as expression of emotion. They should respond to the child’s feelings in words and actions.
