Stares longer at faces of persons from another race

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the infant when persons from another race interact with her in the home or community.

Elicitation Strategy

No elicitation needed.

Behavior Observed

The infant stares and shows intense interest in persons of another color.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Help parents understand that based on how family members interact with the infant, the infant’s response will be different. They already know that Mom is (typically) the primary caretaker and comforter, while Dad likes to move and interact in more intense interactions. The same is true for siblings, who are closer in size to the infant, and thus interesting.
