Observe the adult and child sharing a book.

Hand the book to the child and watch what he does with it. Then open the book and begin to read or talk about the pictures.

The infant uses two hands to hold the book and may put the book up to his mouth to explore it. After the adult begins to read the book, the infant helps turn the pages by lifting them and moving them to the left.

Early childhood educators and parents can help children understand how to use books, by allowing the child to be involved in the actions needed to read the book. Picking up the book, opening it, and helping to turn the pages are important actions for the child to learn.
