Listens to the adult while looking at pictures in a book

Situations for Observation of Skill

Observe the adult and child sharing a book.

Elicitation Strategy

The adult names objects and talks to the infant about the pictures, giving him time to look and respond.

Behavior Observed

The infant relates what he hears to what he sees. Looking at pictures and hearing the adult comment on the pictures holds the infant’s attention.

Routines-based Intervention (Embedded Instruction)

Encourage early childhood educators and parents to read simple books to the infant and talk about the pictures in books as they read. The infant is starting to realize that the words said by the adult relate to the pictures she is seeing.
