Place the infant in a sitting position, so he can observe the environment. Have several novel items (toys, household items, etc.) for the infant to look at and explore.

First just have the items near the infant. If the infant does not reach for one, hand an object to them.

The infant may study the objects before reaching for one. Alternatively, the infant may reach for the first one she sees. Watch how she looks at the object, turns it, and examines it before putting it in the mouth to see how it tastes.

Encourage early childhood educators and parents to point out different aspects of objects. This will encourage infants to notice color, shape, components, and so on. This is important for infant’s learning about cause-and-effect, classification, and labeling.
