Watch the baby in play on the floor.
With the baby in a preferred position (back, stomach, or sitting) give the baby an interesting toy that moves, vibrates, or makes noise. Then move the toy just out of the babies reach and activate the toy again.
If the baby is on his back place the toy up by his face, but out of reach. He will roll over to get it and may roll back to play with it. If the baby is on his stomach, he will commando crawl to get it. If sitting the infant will reach and may move to his stomach to reach it.
Help parents understand that one reason babies start to crawl is to access the people and objects in their environment. Parents can encourage the accomplishment of this milestone by using toys and themselves as the reward for babies learning how to move their bodies in different ways.
